Outlast - a computer game in the genre of survival horror from the first person, developed and released by Red Barrels for Windows platforms in 2013. Later versions of the game for macOS, GNU / Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were released. The action of Outlast takes place in an abandoned psychiatric hospital, where the hero-journalist faces bloodthirsty madmen. Unlike many similar games, the game character has no weapons and is forced to flee and hide from the pursuing enemies.

The player acts in the role of journalist Miles Apsher, whose management is carried out in the first person. Miles carries a notebook with him, during which he makes notes and a video camera. Since Miles is an ordinary person who does not own any weapons, a video camera is the only thing that can be used.

The camera is equipped with a night vision device, without which it is simply impossible to move around in a poorly lit clinic. When using the night vision device, the camera starts to discharge quickly, which forces the player to constantly search for scattered batteries everywhere.

The game process includes solving simple puzzles, secretive movement, as well as the moments in which it is necessary to escape from their pursuers, overcoming various obstacles, and to hide in the dark, lockers for clothes, under beds and in other secluded places. In the game, the main character has no allies, apart from Martin´s father and one patient who persecutes and assists you throughout the game.
